East Cape Fishing Report! May 2017

For this time of year, the past few months have been out-of-character for fishing on the East Cape. After a mild winter and above-average sea surface temperatures for the winter months, optimism was high when striped marlin appeared in abundance in February. The early signs of inconsistency in the bite, with schools of marlin appearing and then disappearing at will during that time, should have been an indicator. Instead of the fish arriving on the East Cape (where they migrate to spawn) and then staying in our waters in increasing

East Cape Fishing Report! March 2017

After a winter(off-season) hiatus, East Cape Fishing Reports return! We had an optimistic start to the “late winter bite”, with sporadic schools of striped marlin appearing in our fishing grounds in February. Typically, their arrival is dictated by sea surface temperatures; striped marlin enjoy temps in the mid-70’s. A generally mild winter had warmer-than-normal conditions, and some good numbers were being caught and released during the past month. However, our typical northerly winter trade winds tend to push cooler water down the peninsula, and the fish move south. Our most

HOLY COW, CAN YOU SAY “TUNA”??!?? The past few weeks have been excellent for fishing here on the East Cape, and leading the way has been a resurgence in the numbers of huge yellowfin tuna swimming in our fishing grounds. East Cape Fishing Report! Oct 2016

Along with hot late summer weather comes hot fishing, and the multi-species bonanza continues here on the East Cape. Leading the way are yellowfin tuna and wahoo, with excellent numbers of both species keeping guests at our Hotels smiling, and sending them home with full coolers. While the tuna haven’t been the giants of early summer (back in June we were regularly breaking the 200# mark and even had a few enormous specimens weighing in over 300 pounds), we are seeing some good numbers of fish. Many of the tuna

East Cape Fishing Report! May 2016

Fishing success improved dramatically as the calendar turned to mid-April, and has continued to accelerate into the month of May. Multiple species are on the prowl, and anglers are ranging far and wide across our fishing grounds depending on what preferences they have for a day’s fishing. Yellowfin tuna appeared suddenly and the season started with some boats landing ten-fish limits of 15-30# fish right out of the gate. Then, a few fish topping 50# were caught, and before we knew it the 100# size came to the dock. Such

East Cape Fishing Report! April 2016

After a lull in March fishing during the full moon phase, overall success for a variety of species has ramped way up in our fishing grounds in the Sea of Cortez. Leading the way are good numbers of striped marlin, one of our most popular spring species. Boats in our fleet are averaging 2-3 marlin caught and released per boat each day. In addition to spotting marlin “tailing” on the surface and catching them with pitched live and dead baits, anglers are trolling marlin lures to entice this hard-fighting species.

East Cape Fishing Report! March 2016

Fishing is way above par for early March in the Sea of Cortez. Sea surface temps have been in the 73-77 degree range across our fishing grounds for the past several weeks, and the 2016 fishing season has started off with a big bang as a result! Leading the way are excellent numbers of striped marlin, with boats in our fleet reporting multiple shots at billfish per day, and 2-3 marlin caught and released as “an average day.” Most fish are being teased to the surface with trolling lures, but

East Cape Fishing Report Feb 2016

Fishing has been “much better than average” for the months of January and February so far this winter! The strong El Nino weather pattern means our sea surface temps are much higher than normal for this time of year. We’ve consistently seen temps in our fishing grounds in the 74-79 degree range, when in a “normal” winter we should bottom out around 70 degrees. Warmer water means more big predators hanging around, more baitfish, and better fishing! Striped marlin numbers are strong for this time of year. Multiple hookups are

2015 Fishing Reports

East Cape Fishing Report! 11/2/15 The major category 5 hurricane Patricia seemed to push even more fish into the Sea of Cortez this month. Patricia passed about 360 miles to our south as it made landfall near Puerto Vallarta, and even though we didn’t have any wind/weather related to the storm touch our region, the fishing has really cranked up in the past ten days. While we’ve already been having a great year for fishing (with the exception of mostly spotty dorado action throughout the year), the numbers of billfish are
